Review: Call Of Duty: World At War Map Pack 1 (Xbox 360)

Review: Call Of Duty: World At War Map Pack 1 (Xbox 360)

It is always good to see downloadable content for a game that actually adds something worth playing. This download gives you new maps for Call of Duty: World at War and along with that new opportunities to gain XP, snipe and camp!!

Knee Deep is set in a Japanese village. It’s a very large map, set outdoors, with bamboo huts and concrete bunkers. Plenty big enough for team deathmatches. There are also a few good spots to setup as a sniper.

Station, although the smallest of the maps, is probably my favourite. Set in an underground station ruined by many bombing raids. I like how parts of it are enclosed and claustrophobic. You could be running round a corner and someone could be running the other way and then bullets start flying!!

Nightfire is auguably the best looking map of the pack. Set in the bombed ruins of Berlin, this map is made for team deathmatches with plenty a spots your team can hold out.

The forth map is a new scenario for the Nazi Zombie mode. Called Verrückt, which means crazy or mad in German, is based on the Berlin asylum that appears when you play the Russian levels of the single player campaign. This new addition takes the mode closer to a game in its own right!!

With the release of the first map pack for Call of Duty: World at War Treyarch have given fans of the multiplayer game, not only a chance to gain some extra XP, but also some kick ass maps!!

Review: Call of Duty: World At War (Xbox 360)

Here it is, Call of Duty: World at War. A game, I think, will make or break the series. Since Call of Duty went all modern it has brought a lot of new fans to the series itself.

I went back and played Call of Duty 3 in preparation for the return of WWII to the Call of Duty series I’ve gotta tell you, this time round that war has got a whole lot better!! As this installment uses a version of the Call of Duty 4 engine the graphics are as good as you would expect. Either fighting as the US in the Pacific or the Russians in Europe the graphics are smooth, crisp and atmospheric.

The voice acting is pretty good this time round although I did actually think that it sounds more like Willem Defoe playing Roebuck!!

The level design is in some ways not as well thought out as I had hoped. sometimes I found myself walking around in circles trying to, well, trigger the next part of a mission. Maybe it’s a bug no-one in QA picked up on. That was the Pacific levels, the Russian ones were probably my favouite. Less Japanese soldiers throwing themselves at you!!

On LIVE this is a different game from Call of Duty 4, and it is not just the weapons. Well, they play a part. Without the features of modern weapons you really have to think more on multiplayer. No longer is it about firing you weopon and hoping on of your bullets kills the enemy. you have to think as some weapons need reloading after every shot. This means you are unarmed for a few seconds and open for a pot shot from someone else. A lot of gamers who play CoD 4 online might not find this trip to WWII as fun. When the beta was released a few months ago many said that the multiplayer wasn’t as good. My advice: give it a go. There is fun to be had from multiplayer. As with any game, you have to learn how to get the best out of the weapons at hand. Once you do it is a hell of a blast!!

Overall this is a great game and it should be judged in its own right and not compared to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. If you are a fan of the whole Call of Duty series you will not be disappointed!!
