Review: Tales Of Monkey Island: Lair Of The Leviathan (PC)

Oh Guybrush, what have you got yourself into this time? The Belly of a giant manatee it appears. When you begin this episode you should really take a look around and enjoy the effort that has gone into producing what the designers would think a post modernistic manatee interior would look like.

Things start to get a little odd with this episode to be honest, but not in a bad way. I mean, in what other game are you going to find a men’s club situated just above a bile pit in a manatee gut? And in what other game are you going to find a bunch of explorers/pirates who have become addicted to drinking Ichor in varying colours? None I would suspect, but as per usual Monkey Island is a game filled with oddities and wonderful little scenes that make the usual gamers go….err what? Oh and there is a welcome return from a fan favourite…Murray yaaaaaaayy!

Review: Tales Of Monkey Island: The Siege Of Spinner Cay (PC)

What would a Tales of Monkey Island episode be without a little peril to start with?

We left our intrepid hero about to sail off with the recently acquired ship, the Screaming Narwhal, after having defeated the strange Marquis De Singe, who has decided that he must have Guybrush and his voodoo pox addled hand for some weird experiment he is conducting. The Marquis is the one who changed the winds on the island in order to bring more victims ….I mean patients to the island in order to try his latest techniques on them.

Anyway, on with the plot.

Guybrush begins the game with a sword fight with a rather pretty young pirate hunter called Morgan LeFlay and in the process loses his hand to her. He lands shortly after at a small group of islands and finds his wife, Elaine, and a now human LeChuck as well as a host of inept voodoo pox suffering pirates and a tribe of androgynous people.

Review: Tales Of Monkey Island: Launch Of The Screaming Narwhal (PC)

At long last a happy return to the Monkey Island games. As you could probably tell from reading any other point and click adventure game reviews I have written, I am a huge fan of the series, and yes that does include the rather poor ‘Escape From Monkey Island’ which was released on the PC and PS2 what seems like an eternity ago. So when our illustrious Boss man gave me this opportunity I was literally bouncing in my seat as I waited for the download to complete. I double clicked the Icon on my desktop and a huge grin spread across my face as I heard that iconic theme music.

The game begins as excitingly as you could hope for, with our hapless hero GuyBrush Threepwood, the wannabe pirate and husband to Governor Elaine Marley Threepwood, about to end the long battle with his nemesis the ghost/zombie/demon/something or other voodoo type monster pirate LeChuck. Of course, in a typical Monkey Island turn of events the battle doesn’t turn out the way he planned and instead of killing LeChuck he removes his evil and turns him into an amiable human once more….However, there is a side effect with Guybrush’s hand being possessed by Lechucks evil ala Evil Dead. From there the adventure only gets weirder and a lot funnier as Guybrush must locate the rather secretive and elusive DeepGut on Flotsam Island, a strange place where ships can land but never leave because the winds always come to the island but never blow from it. I could go on with the story but I don’t want to spoil too much of it for you.
