Review: Patchwork Heroes (PSP)

Review: Patchwork Heroes (PSP)

Remember Qix? Actually I was a little young for its original release but having played it in later years; I instantly recognised the formula when I loaded up Patchwork Heroes. Fortunately it’s an excellent formula that’s aged well making Patchwork Heroes well worth a look at a mere £6.29.

It’s a rather surreal tale at first. You play Titori, a chainsaw wielding soldier who must board enemy warships and saw through the ship until it explodes. Quirky way of winning a war, yes, but it’s good fun. At its most basic, all that Titori needs to do is saw through areas of the warship thus cutting it off from the rest of the ship and plummeting to the ground, but there’s more depth than that. Along the way there are various collectibles to aid your progress ranging from speed boots to power ups that stop time. Titori must also free his fellow countrymen along the way. Once freed these hostages can then help by planting bombs clearing the reinforced metal sections of the ship that Titori can’t saw through. Finally, Titori also has Mojo power which once activated increases his power and allows him to take out more areas of the ship, faster and more effectively.

Review: White Knight Chronicles (PS3)

Review: White Knight Chronicles (PS3)

Level 5 have a good reputation. It started with Dark Cloud, improved greatly with Dark Chronicles and was kept in check by Rogue Galaxy, although the RPG fans will agree that the middle one was the best of the lot. The Playstation 3 has been a little slow on the pick up when it comes to the role playing game with its heritage in the land of the rising sun. We’ve had Fallout 3, Demon’s Souls (if you like to import, mind), Dragon Age and so on. To be honest, it’s about time we had a sample of a proper JRPG and, just like the bus syndrome, as you wait for one, quite a few come along at once.

Final Fantasy and Resonance of Fate have both recently been released, with the two more traditional titles receiving fairly positive reviews. Finally, Level 5 have given us their first offering on the PS3 and while it stays along similar lines to the heritage of what has come before, it also strays off in a different direction.

Hands-On: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (Xbox 360)

Hands-On: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (Xbox 360)

Spain vs Italy – a huge match. Streamers cascade from the sky, passing across the bright midday sun. The players walk out side-by-side, tension building as they pass the World Cup, sitting proudly on its pedestal. Fans with their faces painted, shout, scream and dance in the crowd. The managers pace nervously, feeling the ever-increasing atmosphere build.

EA have definitely captured the feel of a World Cup, updating the standard look and sound of the game, creating something new and exciting – at least for the moment anyway. The menus are bright and colourful with oranges and reds adorning everything. There’s even a little World Cup mascot that appears on the loading screen to give you random World Cup facts. Once you get to the actual game it looks more like Madden than FIFA; with crowd details, face paint, hats, flags etc. Even showing the managers walking around and talking to the players, both things that Madden has done for years, and the FIFA games have been needing.
