You probably haven’t heard of Mr Gum but your kids, nieces/nephews and cousins will have. The Mr Gum series of books are aimed at younger readers, namely the 8-10 age group. They’re a fun series of books about the grumpy Mr Gum and his town of Lamonic Bibber. Each story offers plenty of jokes and laughs to keep kids entertained. They’re the sort of thing that I’d have loved as a kid who was obsessed with the Ha Ha Bonk joke book. Mr Gum is also the star of one of the latest Flips interactive books and deservedly so.
Review: 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
Once upon a time I played a game on the Commodore 64 called The Great Giana Sisters. It was Super Mario Bros with another name really and it was withdrawn from sale due to some legal pressure courtesy of Nintendo. It seems that times change though as here we are with 3D Dot Game Heroes, the most blatant homage to the original Legend of Zelda games that I’ve ever seen. Fortunately there’s no sign of another lawsuit on the way, which is good news, as 3D Dot Game Heroes is as much fun as the original Zeldas were back in the day. It’s also at times as infuriating and dated too.
It’s a simple tale to open 3D Dot Game Heroes. You play a nameless warrior in the land of Dotnia and the King has changed the 2D world to 3D using Dark Orbs. Surprise, surprise, the Dark King has stolen them and hidden them in a number of different dungeons and it’s down to you to collect them all. So far, so predictable it is then.
Review: Dead To Rights: Retribution (PS3)
When I looked at this I was thinking that this would be a great way of bringing back that BBC favourite One Man and his Dog for the new millennium. A crime fighting cop who sees his father die whilst investigating a big case decides to take life into his own hands by dealing out death on the bad guys with the help of his blood obsessed wolf. Certainly beats ten out of ten for the pen, if you ask me.
As many of you will know, Jack Slate and Shadow are no strangers to the video game scene. This is their 3rd outing, but the first on the current generation consoles. The third person action genre has been swelling up a little though, with quite a number of fresh ideas being chucked into the old styles since their last release, resulting in classics like Gears of War or, if you want a different slant, the Ghost Recon series. Fair enough they don’t have a canine companion in them, but does the added bonus of a pedigree chum help the gameplay any?
