Review: Hydrophobia (Xbox 360)

Review: Hydrophobia (Xbox 360)

Did you know that Hydrophobia was originally intended as a full retail release as opposed to a digital download? Well if you didn’t, you’ve been educated right there. Dark Energy Digital are better known for their World Championship Snooker games, so it’s not surprising that alarm bells ring when there is a departure from the norm as drastic as this.

Dark Energy’s HydroEngine is the true-star of Hydrophobia and it really is a looker. You’ll find yourself opening doors and smashing glass just to watch the flow of water and how it reacts with the surroundings and objects. The engine creates a natural weapon that can be devastatingly effective when used in combat. It has the ability to sweep foes off their feet, drown them and create scenarios where the many environmental hazards can be used to dispatch helpless goons.

Review: Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light (Xbox 360)

Review: Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light (Xbox 360)

Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light is not like any other Tomb Raider game. This much is clear right from the beginning, and the lack of Tomb Raider in the title is quite a clear sign too. No, this is Lara Croft and an altogether different beast. It’s a formula that ensures that the latest instalment in Lara Croft’s life is one of the most entertaining chapters in recent years.

So now seems like a wholly appropriate time for a change of pace. Enter the arcadey and distinctly isometric The Guardian of Light. A game that is as much about acquiring high scores as it is collecting treasures and exploring tombs.

Review: Blade Kitten (Xbox 360)

Review: Blade Kitten (Xbox 360)

Cats are notorious for getting their claws into your furniture, your curtains and your skin. What happens when one gets into the Xbox LIVE Marketplace? Blade Kitten of course.

Blade kitten is a 2.5D side-scrolling platform/slash-em-up affair that puts players in control of Kit, the half woman, half cat bounty hunter. The storyline is vague at very best, and is loosely tied together by several “missions” handed out by lead characters.

Platforming is the main agenda in Blade Kitten as most combat can be avoided, save for some tedious boss battles. Some switch puzzles are scattered around each level and occasionally the pace is broken up by some “mount” racing. If you feel compelled to collect the hidden treasure chests, there are plenty to find. It’s a monotonous approach, in which most every aspect of gameplay can be avoided until the next dull cut-scene.
