Review: Bioshock 2: Sinclair Solutions Test Pack DLC (Xbox 360)

Review: Bioshock 2: Sinclair Solutions Test Pack DLC (Xbox 360)

It’s not often I get annoyed with a game after playing it and loving it as is but 2K have crossed a line that many others have crossed before by releasing this so called DLC. In fact, it is not DLC at all but rather a key to unlock a section of the multiplayer game which was already included on the disc. I actually detest companies that do this. I have already paid for the disc and all of its contents, at least that’s what I thought, so why would I want to shell out extra money for something which in essence I have already paid for?

Review: Death By Cube (Xbox 360)

Review: Death By Cube (Xbox 360)

Xbox.com describes Death By Cube as an “exhilarating action game in which you must take out endless hordes of enemies, while avoiding the rapid barrage of their fire that envelopes the screen”. The key words here are “rapid barrage” and “fire”, and the missing words are insane, impossible and smashed Xbox.

I know twin-stick shooters are supposed to be hard but this game sets a new notch on the bar of difficulty. Left stick to move, right stick to shoot, nice and simple, and the same as every other game in the genre. What the game does differently, or at least to my knowledge, is allowing you to dash with LB/LT, creating a clone of yourself to distract enemy fire, and pressing RB/RT to summon a shield that sucks up enemies bullets and fires them right back at them.

But simple controls does not equate to a simple game, quite the opposite in fact, as Death By Cube throws a relentless amount of enemies at you. You have your standard enemies, which are cubes of course, that simply run towards you with the intent of exploding. These are fairly easy to deal with but again the amount increases the difficulty. When you throw in shooting enemies then the whole thing becomes a horrid laser filled mess.

Review: Toy Soldiers (Xbox 360)

Review: Toy Soldiers (Xbox 360)

I have one big issue with Toy Soldiers. This same issue also happens to be one entirely built from my own prejudices. It is this: Signal Games has smudged the brutal realities of war. I feel like Toy Soldiers pulls its punches exactly where it could land a knock-out blow by making a bold statement. It’s extremely frustrating, too, since everything else about Toy Soldiers has a pleasing simplicity that allows a wide audience to revel in a classic game of tower defence strategy.

Put another way, I want to love Toy Soldiers, and I very nearly do. It’s a quality game – those downloading it from the Marketplace will find much to enjoy. Instead, though, I’ve come away with a slightly dubious feeling, like I’ve been tricked.

Review: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Stimulus Map Pack DLC (Xbox 360)

Review: Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Stimulus Map Pack DLC (Xbox 360)

Well, at least it’s out there now. It’s not often you get a single add-on pack that generates about as much hype and expectation as a full blown Christmas release, but Infinity Ward and Activision have managed to create a points sapping epidemic by making the first map pack for Modern Warfare 2. This isn’t without a slight degree of controversy, as many people question the value placed upon this expansion due to the higher than expected price tag, bearing in mind that maps have already been played countless time on the previous Modern Warfare. Crash and Overgrown aside though, can this really stand up to a 1200 point purchase?

I could go into detail about every map; and for those who are unfamiliar with the previous encounters I will, but to be honest that will be about three people in a remote country in the middle of nowhere who have never seen a battery, let alone broadband equipment and an Xbox 360. For those well versed in the ways of the CoD however would be best to skip a few paragraphs until you hear mention of the three new arenas of death and destruction (Bailout, Storm and Salvage).

Review: Perfect Dark (Xbox 360)

Review: Perfect Dark (Xbox 360)

I’m one of the lucky ones. I still have the original cartridge of Perfect Dark AND an N64 with one of those Expansion Pack things forced into the top like it was essential life force to allow it to continue breathing. The only problem is nowadays you can’t get away with looking at a quarter of a 14 inch (or 16 inch if you were SPOILT) TV along with 3 of your friends as you all clamber for top spot on the kill table on Felicity. It’s all big LCD and Plasma sets and High Definition gaming now, so Rare’s second best shooter has had to up its game to contend on the Marketplace. Can it truly be perfect, or will it leave us in the dark, wondering what could have been?

The story hasn’t changed a single jot, mind you neither has any of the major workings of Perfect Dark. The story still follows Joanna and her “I’m not really a fat Sean Connery, honest.” boss, Mr Carrington, as they embark on a mission to track down an alien life form and investigate the Datadyne Corporation and all their fresh technology. The story was always a little far fetched, but it’s only now when you have all the money in the world to spend on big productions that you can appreciate, in some levels anyway, how far we’ve come.
