Review: Dream Chronicles (Xbox 360)

Review: Dream Chronicles (Xbox 360)

Dream Chronicles snuck onto Xbox LIVE with hardly any furore. Coming out the same day as Costume Quest and Super Meat Boy didn’t help it in the slightest. Pity really, as if you’re after a much more casual title you could do a lot worse than play Dream Chronicles. Rather predictably though, if you like big explosions, this is your idea of hell.

Dream Chronicles is a hidden object game – a genre that might sound unfamiliar to console only gamers. Hidden object games involve being given a list of items and being told to find them within a certain area. This area being a static screen’s worth of content. It sounds thrilling doesn’t it? It’s really quite compelling though. Assuming you’re in the mood for something that calming and soothing.

Review: Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (Xbox 360)

Review: Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (Xbox 360)

It says in the media that this is the game we’ve all waited 16 years for, and in some cases that’s true, as there really hasn’t been a terrific 3D Sonic game to write home about, except for the Dreamcast’s first effort (which got a port not justifying it’s stature recently). The time has come for Sonic Team to actually do what most of the gaming public has been crying out for and that is to bring the hedgehog back to his roots, his Genesis if you will, and give us that good old fashioned left to right jumping and ring collecting vibe we had all those moons ago.

There is no reason for a story explanation, as it’s always the same. Dr Robotnik is trying to take over the world (they say Eggman, but to me he will always be the doctor) and Sonic needs to run about collecting whatever he can and save animals from the monsters they’ve become, at least that’s the only way I can explain how penguins and rabbits pop out of metallic monstrosities when they get killed off.

Review: Saw II: Flesh & Blood (Xbox 360)

Review: Saw II: Flesh & Blood (Xbox 360)

The Saw franchise is officially spiraling out of control in a Friday the 13th fashion, with a seventh movie on the way and now its second prequel game Saw II: Flesh & Blood. The first game was depressingly bland, with horrible controls, repetitive puzzle solving and a hit and miss button-bashing combat system. It was, for lack of a better word, averagely ugly. Saw II has had the chance to correct all these issues, but it hasn’t, read on to find out why.

Review: Fable III (Xbox 360)

Review: Fable III (Xbox 360)

Fable’s story from its well respected roots to its third entity has taken many twists and turns. Lionhead and its enigmatic lead, Peter Molyneux, always build the gaming public up into an expectant mob with their promises. They have often met their own lofty goals but have admittedly fallen short on others. In Fable 2 you could get married, have sex, catch STD’s, buy property, kill, hug and tickle people, in whatever order you please. It was almost too much, with many of the important elements suffering from being forced to share the attention.

And in Fable III you can do even more: adopt children, merge magical powers, take on moral decisions that outweigh everything before them and become ruler of Albion. But behind all of these exciting options lies an honest and interesting story, something that Fable 2 lacked, offering more reward in its many side quests and their often amusing characters.

Review: WRC: FIA World Rally Championship (Xbox 360)

Review: WRC: FIA World Rally Championship (Xbox 360)

It’s been five years since the last fully licensed, and official, WRC game hit game stores; the last iteration being released on PSP in 2005. Since then there was silence. The relatively unknown Milestone has stepped in to take on development duties and bring one of the world’s favourite racing pastimes back to the consoles with a fully licensed product. Does it hit the mark or does it simply leave skid marks?
