Review: 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)

Review: 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)

Once upon a time I played a game on the Commodore 64 called The Great Giana Sisters. It was Super Mario Bros with another name really and it was withdrawn from sale due to some legal pressure courtesy of Nintendo. It seems that times change though as here we are with 3D Dot Game Heroes, the most blatant homage to the original Legend of Zelda games that I’ve ever seen. Fortunately there’s no sign of another lawsuit on the way, which is good news, as 3D Dot Game Heroes is as much fun as the original Zeldas were back in the day. It’s also at times as infuriating and dated too.

It’s a simple tale to open 3D Dot Game Heroes. You play a nameless warrior in the land of Dotnia and the King has changed the 2D world to 3D using Dark Orbs. Surprise, surprise, the Dark King has stolen them and hidden them in a number of different dungeons and it’s down to you to collect them all. So far, so predictable it is then.

Review: Dead To Rights: Retribution (PS3)

Review: Dead To Rights: Retribution (PS3)

When I looked at this I was thinking that this would be a great way of bringing back that BBC favourite One Man and his Dog for the new millennium. A crime fighting cop who sees his father die whilst investigating a big case decides to take life into his own hands by dealing out death on the bad guys with the help of his blood obsessed wolf. Certainly beats ten out of ten for the pen, if you ask me.

As many of you will know, Jack Slate and Shadow are no strangers to the video game scene. This is their 3rd outing, but the first on the current generation consoles. The third person action genre has been swelling up a little though, with quite a number of fresh ideas being chucked into the old styles since their last release, resulting in classics like Gears of War or, if you want a different slant, the Ghost Recon series. Fair enough they don’t have a canine companion in them, but does the added bonus of a pedigree chum help the gameplay any?

Review: Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Episode 1: The Penal Zone (PS3)

Review: Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Episode 1: The Penal Zone (PS3)

Along with Johnny Bravo, Ren & Stimpy and Cow & Chicken, Sam & Max has to be included in my list of cartoons that died before their time. The humour was always out there and the animation never really conformed to your more traditional kid’s fare, usually ending up with a load of gags that would have a different meaning to them when looked at through older eyes.

The first Sam & Max game did fairly well for itself and Telltale Games began to build a name in the adventure genre, along with the Wallace and Gromit stuff that have seen decent return on the consoles. This newest case involves the evil General Skunkape trying to search out some specific toys hidden on Earth that have special psychic powers, which can only be utilised by individuals who have this gift. It’s not really a shock to learn that Max, that deranged rabbit with a rather nasty sense of humour, is one of those special people with said ability, but can he save the world by finding these rare items?

Review: White Knight Chronicles (PS3)

Review: White Knight Chronicles (PS3)

Level 5 have a good reputation. It started with Dark Cloud, improved greatly with Dark Chronicles and was kept in check by Rogue Galaxy, although the RPG fans will agree that the middle one was the best of the lot. The Playstation 3 has been a little slow on the pick up when it comes to the role playing game with its heritage in the land of the rising sun. We’ve had Fallout 3, Demon’s Souls (if you like to import, mind), Dragon Age and so on. To be honest, it’s about time we had a sample of a proper JRPG and, just like the bus syndrome, as you wait for one, quite a few come along at once.

Final Fantasy and Resonance of Fate have both recently been released, with the two more traditional titles receiving fairly positive reviews. Finally, Level 5 have given us their first offering on the PS3 and while it stays along similar lines to the heritage of what has come before, it also strays off in a different direction.

Review: God Of War III (PS3)

Review: God Of War III (PS3)

It’s been a long and winding road for Kratos. On his quest to thwart the plans of Zeus, the battle hardened warrior has endured much suffering. From seeing his family die by his own hand to taking out some of the most well known and, let’s be honest, kick-ass Gods and creatures in Greek mythology, he’s undoubtedly had a hard time of it. Now, however, his quest for vengeance comes to an end in the Playstation 3’s first outing for the Santa Monica team and their extremely well loved series.

To say this has a reputation to uphold would be one of those understatements that would stick in folklore, much like saying the sky is blue and the grass is green (unless you’re colour blind, as then it can be any shade you like, I suppose). The first game brought about a high-octane, massively impacting change to the more standard sword hurling genre it tried to re-define. Combos became commonplace and the pace was well met, with some rather meaty boss battles mixed with some rather cunning puzzles to keep the grey cells working, usually to help remind them to pick your jaw up off the floor from how the game looked.

The second God of War took what the first had done and didn’t just enhance it; it honed it to such a precise level in both graphics and structure that it became to many people the game of the Playstation 2’s lifespan. Some battles would last for a long time, running at such a smooth and silky frame rate that it was a joy to behold. It was pushing the hardware so much that 60 frames a second on a constant basis was never going to be possible, but it was never far off, producing an extremely good mid section for this three act play.
