Review: Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Episode 4: Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (PS3)

Review: Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Episode 4: Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (PS3)

The 4th chapter of the Devil’s Playhouse brings us to the conclusion that the guys at Telltale Games are absolutely barking mad (and I’m not talking about dog noises because one of the main characters is a dog). Not only are we dealing with a toy box that has demonic toys with special powers in it, cleverly utilised and controlled by a psycho rabbit whilst befriending 6 feet cockroaches with jobs, but just when you think it can’t get any stranger it just goes and creates a whole load of Sam clones and fills the city with more dogs than Crufts.

Your task in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is to find out who is creating all of those doppelgangers and bring them to justice, by fair means or foul. Thankfully there are no deviants on how to do things this time, like the dodgy interrogation style in the last one. Instead this relies on what good stuff has already been implemented in the previous trilogy of titles and tries to further that by looking towards its tour de force, the scriptwriting.

Review: Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days (PS3)

Review: Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days (PS3)

When I first heard this was being released I had to ask why. Why release a follow up to a game that was so damned irritating, not to mention clunky and hard to control? Well, the simple fact is it sold a lot of copies and made enough money to warrant a sequel. I never really played a lot of the first mainly due to those reasons (I gave it an hour, got bored and switched it off to be perfectly blunt about it) so this second one needs to be a damn sight better to hold my interest this time.

The signs from the demo were pretty good. A Gears of War style covering system and a really gritty visual style made for a good degree of satisfaction, enough to make me look forward to reviewing it. Now that I have been through the story mode, let me tell you just what I think of it.

Hands-On: The Sony Blue Truck Extravaganza (PS3)

Hands-On: The Sony Blue Truck Extravaganza (PS3)

It’s not often that I get to do stuff that not many people have done in terms of gaming, but to say I got a privileged look at a few of the big things coming from Sony over the next 6 months would be a rather big understatement.

Hidden within the confines of a rather big blue truck (with what has to be the SLOWEST automatic doors in the whole history of non-manual entry and exiting systems) were a nice little plethora of forthcoming games from the PlayStation makers. Move was there again to tease us with its intricacies, as well as a pre-alpha code version of Killzone 3 and a sneak peek at both Gran Turismo 5 and MotorStorm: Apocalypse. The only problem I have now is to work out where to start.

Review: Shrek Forever After (PS3)

Review: Shrek Forever After (PS3)

It’s been a strong time of late for the kids game genre. LEGO Harry Potter was ridiculously enjoyable, even for adults, and Toy Story 3′s toybox mode has put a smile on even the most cold-hearted of adult gamers. Even better, both games have been rather highly regarded by their target audience – children – too. So it’s a shame then that Shrek Forever After is quite a step backwards. Even more frustratingly, it clearly had the potential to be quite good but it doesn’t manage it. While it’s not terrible, it’s not really very good either.

Review: Joe Danger (PS3)

Review: Joe Danger (PS3)

The best way to describe Hello Games’ creation, that mild mannered stunt rider called Joe Danger, would be to think of some crazy mix up between Trials HD and Excitebike. I feel that unlike most other reviews that I do that waffle on for about 5 minutes about how this and that have something to do with something else which inevitably leads me to the start of proceedings, I would just get down to business and get on with telling you exactly what to expect and enjoy with this title. Please allow me to retort.

The main story to this is that Joe is a washed-up old has been who is told by almost all of his fans and the media that his day has gone, vowing that he’ll never reach those dizzy heights ever again. Whenever someone is told that, ESPECIALLY in cheesy feel good movies, they rally together with some high impact orchestra doing their stuff behind them and as reliable as night turns to day, you find the main man being his old self again. Well, it’s pretty much the same here. You are Mr Danger and you’re having one last shot at being the king of the jumps again.
