Review: Tales Of Monkey Island: The Siege Of Spinner Cay (PC)

Review: Tales Of Monkey Island: The Siege Of Spinner Cay (PC)

What would a Tales of Monkey Island episode be without a little peril to start with?

We left our intrepid hero about to sail off with the recently acquired ship, the Screaming Narwhal, after having defeated the strange Marquis De Singe, who has decided that he must have Guybrush and his voodoo pox addled hand for some weird experiment he is conducting. The Marquis is the one who changed the winds on the island in order to bring more victims ….I mean patients to the island in order to try his latest techniques on them.

Anyway, on with the plot.

Guybrush begins the game with a sword fight with a rather pretty young pirate hunter called Morgan LeFlay and in the process loses his hand to her. He lands shortly after at a small group of islands and finds his wife, Elaine, and a now human LeChuck as well as a host of inept voodoo pox suffering pirates and a tribe of androgynous people.

Review: Tales Of Monkey Island: Launch Of The Screaming Narwhal (PC)

Review: Tales Of Monkey Island: Launch Of The Screaming Narwhal (PC)

At long last a happy return to the Monkey Island games. As you could probably tell from reading any other point and click adventure game reviews I have written, I am a huge fan of the series, and yes that does include the rather poor ‘Escape From Monkey Island’ which was released on the PC and PS2 what seems like an eternity ago. So when our illustrious Boss man gave me this opportunity I was literally bouncing in my seat as I waited for the download to complete. I double clicked the Icon on my desktop and a huge grin spread across my face as I heard that iconic theme music.

The game begins as excitingly as you could hope for, with our hapless hero GuyBrush Threepwood, the wannabe pirate and husband to Governor Elaine Marley Threepwood, about to end the long battle with his nemesis the ghost/zombie/demon/something or other voodoo type monster pirate LeChuck. Of course, in a typical Monkey Island turn of events the battle doesn’t turn out the way he planned and instead of killing LeChuck he removes his evil and turns him into an amiable human once more….However, there is a side effect with Guybrush’s hand being possessed by Lechucks evil ala Evil Dead. From there the adventure only gets weirder and a lot funnier as Guybrush must locate the rather secretive and elusive DeepGut on Flotsam Island, a strange place where ships can land but never leave because the winds always come to the island but never blow from it. I could go on with the story but I don’t want to spoil too much of it for you.

Review: FIFA Manager 10 (PC)

Review: FIFA Manager 10 (PC)

FIFA Manager 10 may look better than most football manager style games but in essence it is basically the same as the majority out there. Ultimately it is a minor upgrade of FIFA manager 9.

When I first installed this game I was met with a message which informed me I needed to download the EA downloader in order to complete the install, fair enough I thought, but what happens if you don’t have internet access? This is a problem I find with many games out there at the moment. The designers think that because the majority of their gamers have internet access they can forget those who don’t!

Anyway onto the game itself. To be honest I have not played many manager type games and was a little rusty with the controls and options available. Now the manual included with the game was incredibly vague on what you could do with the game, only focusing on the ‘great’ new features which it had incorporated. The game itself has a beginners mode, but again it is vague and half the time you feel like you are clicking buttons for the sake of clicking buttons. Basically this game is not first timer friendly, which is a shame because when you get further into the experience it becomes incredibly addictive.

Review: Age Of Empires III: Complete Collection (PC)

Review: Age Of Empires III: Complete Collection (PC)

It’s tricky to review a compilation of a game that originally came out four years ago. Technology moves on so fast that something in 2005 that was brilliant, might feel distinctly mediocre and dull now. Unfortunately in the case of this collection of Age of Empires 3 and its two expansion packs, it has suffered badly with age, although there is a glimmer of hope in there still.

There’s no doubt that Age of Empires 3 was a great game at the time. Although it was arguably not quite as entertaining as its two predecessors, it was still an extremely competent RTS. Building upon the Age of Mythology engine, at the time it looked great and immensely detailed, of course this isn’t as apparent now in a world where even strategy titles stick to 3D graphics and still manage to be extremely intricate visually. Fortunately the campaign is still a solid single player affair. The story follows the fictional Black family over three generations, divided into separate acts. It covers a fair amount of ground between the late 17th century to the early 19th century. There are 24 missions in all with various sub-missions so there is plenty to do. The problem is it all feels a little too predictable and generic. So many missions simply require the same old solutions that we’ve all seen countless times before in strategy games. Some of the stories behind the scenarios are neatly written but it all feels like it’s been done a thousand times before, making Age of Empires 3 feel distinctly average. Maybe it’s down to the age of the title but I suspect much of it is simply because Age of Empires 3 lacks true imagination which is essential to any RTS that wants to be more than just satisfactory.
