Review: Truth Or Lies: Someone Will Get Caught (Xbox 360)

Review: Truth Or Lies: Someone Will Get Caught (Xbox 360)

I never realised that a game could be that bad. It wasn’t that long ago that I expressed my strong dislike of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 on this very site. In hindsight though, at least Harry Potter did have some redeeming features (not many admittedly) which is why it was given 2/10. Truth or Lies however is so utterly awful that it greatly deserves its score of 1/10, the lowest I can go really unless the game refused to load at all.

Review: Crazy Taxi (Xbox 360)

Review: Crazy Taxi (Xbox 360)

The Dreamcast was the console that became fondly remembered as having so many classics that not enough people would see, mainly due to the stand-off attitude we all had after Sega’s adventures with the Mega CD and the 32X. In many ways this is true, as from Sonic Adventure to Skies of Arcadia we would see these true gems hit the shelves, yet very few would play them, deciding to jump onto Mr Playstation’s bandwagon.

Crazy Taxi, at the time, was one of those hit titles. The Offspring would launch the theme music into your ear lobes and get you psyched up for a fun and entertaining experience. The atmosphere really helped to create an extra level of enjoyment to what was, on paper, nothing more than taking someone from point A to point B with hilarious consequences.

In the second of the Japanese gaming giant’s releases on the 360, we see Crazy Taxi unveiled again but with a little change, which to the hardcore amongst us it seems like a glaring omission. The main music of the original has been taken out, probably to do with copyright or something, and has been replaced with something similar. But like most things looked at through those glasses of floral colour, it just doesn’t feel the same, and as much as it makes me sound just a little bit shallow I just don’t get that feeling of happiness that I used to get back in the Dreamcast days from this game.

Review: WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 (Xbox 360)

Review: WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 (Xbox 360)

When that Yuke’s logo flashed up on the screen many a memory came crashing down on me like a foot stomping chest chop. My cousin and I used to play Smackdown way back in the day before it formed the rivalry with Raw. They were great games, they allowed you to recreate your favourite matches, fix any results that you weren’t happy with and even create your own ridiculous wrestlers to take through a tediously dull story mode.

Sadly, the tediously dull story mode is still there in the form of Road to Wrestlemania and it’s worse than I remember it. In Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 you only get to take a choice of 5 wrestlers through the three month journey, with each one having their own narrative. I instantly chose Rey Mysterio and his high flying antics, and was greeted with some of the worst cut-scenes and voice acting I have ever seen. Actually, let me take you through it.

Review: Splatterhouse (Xbox 360)

Review: Splatterhouse (Xbox 360)

This is a franchise that means a great deal to me. If I’m allowed to go back in the arcade time machine to around the mid 90’s, I can tell you exactly where I would be on a Wednesday afternoon at about 4pm, and that my friends would be in an amusement arcade playing the original Splatterhouse. The Namco classic, that is to us 20 to 30 somethings what GTA is to the young generation, was the forbidden fruit of the pixel years, that game we felt guilty playing but just couldn’t get enough of. Imagine my reaction when I heard that there was FINALLY going to be a new addition to the series, some 22 years after the original release.

Then imagine how I felt when all the trouble involving the development began to creep through the grapevine. Coding team sackings and arguments almost put this project on hold or even worse, but with some relief emanating from my every pore the game sees itself in the shops and we can finally get some carnage and gore back into our lives again.

Review: Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet (Xbox 360)

Review: Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet (Xbox 360)

Developed by a little known company Griptonite (could that be a deliberate comic book reference?), Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet is essentially a kid’s superhero game based on the cartoon series of the same name, which is incidentally based on the pint-sized toy collection. It is to the Marvel universe what Lego Star Wars was to that Saga of films.

As expected, the controls are simple and are easy to get to grips with. At its heart, it’s a button bashing extravaganza that takes players through various colourful worlds from the cartoon, where they will do battle with minions such as Skrulls and Doombots, before finally taking a shot at the boss of each level.

The presentation is slick enough to keep kids interested, and the voice actors from the show lend their talents so fans can make a real connection. The humour, in honesty, can be very dead pan or slap stick, which can warrant a chuckle now and again from us big kids, although younger audiences may miss the subtle pop culture references and could easily feel left out at times. The music is spot on, if not slightly repetitive, and captures the themes of the show and the Marvel universe quite well. Some of it would not sound out of place in one of the bigger budget Marvel games.
