Review: The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout (Xbox 360)

Review: The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout (Xbox 360)

It’d be immensely satisfying to start this review stating how The Biggest Loser has the perfect title because it’s a big loser. It’s not though. In fact, despite being less obviously excellent, The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout is the best of the fitness “games” currently available for Kinect, even if it does focus rather a lot on your arms.

It’s immediately obvious that this title intends to be less abstract than Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, using a backdrop of more realistic gym settings and animated characters of The Biggest Loser trainers. A 30 minute fitness test starts you off, assessing just what you’re able to withstand. If, like me, you’re in need of The Biggest Loser, it’ll happily stop after a while once you reach a point where it’s obvious that you’re beginning to struggle. The judging afterwards is pretty accurate too while not being too harsh. It determined that my weakest move was jogging (thanks to an old injury) but that I was pretty good at lunges.

Blog: We NEARLY Had The Same Game Of The Year Twice!

Blog: We NEARLY Had The Same Game Of The Year Twice!

The best thing about doing this little feature is that I really don’t know what to class this under. This isn’t a game review because everyone knows just how good a game Mass Effect 2 is. A feature is maybe not accurate either because these opinions may have a slight hint of bias towards them. I would like to think that this will be a blog in a way, but of some relevance and enjoyment to you as the reader. Let’s go with it and see what happens.

I LOVE Mass Effect 2, plain and simple. It was my favourite game of last year and I couldn’t see past the beautiful package of gameplay, storytelling and graphics that it brought to my senses. I’m not the only person that thought that as it did get quite a few awards of the GOTY variety. Bearing in mind though that this was for the Xbox 360, it got me thinking about whether or not we could have had the same game win an award like that 2 years in succession. I mean it has come out on the Playstation 3 now, with that rather too obvious exclusivity deal time frame hanging about too much, so why not?

Review: Kinect Joy Ride (Xbox 360)

Review: Kinect Joy Ride (Xbox 360)

When Joy Ride was announced as a release title for the Kinect motion controller there was a seething swarm of hatred for Microsoft, as it was originally intended as a free to play digital download. Now that the dust has settled, Joy Ride has actually proved to be quite a nifty little title.

The major concern when it comes to any motion controlled game is always does it work? The simple answer is yes. Accelerating and braking are taken care of by the computer, but from there it’s up to the player to hold their hands out and steer as if driving a real car. It’s a remarkably simple yet effective control system that allows the player to power-slide by leaning their body into the turns, like we’ve all done at some point or another in our lives, and twist and lean to perform stunts in mid-air. It’s a simple concept that anyone can pick up, but it’s too simplified to provide anything but a quick blast.

Review: Call Of Duty: Black Ops: First Strike DLC (Xbox 360)

Review: Call Of Duty: Black Ops: First Strike DLC (Xbox 360)

It’s always exciting for a fan when a new map pack lands, especially if we’re talking about the first map pack for the biggest selling game of 2010. First Strike, like Modern Warfare 2′s iterations, comes with four new maps for multiplayer but with the added bonus of an extra map for the zombies game mode.

Review: Breach (Xbox 360)

Review: Breach (Xbox 360)

Atomic Games are better known for their military simulations, used by the Army to train their soldiers. Once again the Army is so impressed with Atomic’s work that they are going to use an advanced version of Breach, their latest release, as a form of combat simulator. What does that mean for gamers? And how does Breach play as an online game for fun?

For starters, Breach is no Call of Duty. It’s not as easy to jump into the action, get a few kills, and level up your character with a vast armoury. It’s a slow process of grinding to the top, purchasing perks and equipment for the one gun you’ll need to use over the next few hundred kills, before receiving a nice shiny new toy to play with. It’s not an over-the-top all guns blazing action romp, but a more thoughtful and tactical game that requires teamwork, and some cases, uniformed precision.
