After the back to basics level that was ‘Lost In Nightmares’, we go back to the future in this rather short level. This DLC will be a godsend for those who only got into the Resident Evil games with the release of part four and five as the puzzles are of an even more minimalist variation than the main game itself. Yes folks, you guessed it, this is a straight up blastathon with little regard to giving your mind a little workout. In fact all you really have to think about is how much ammo you have and if you remembered to blast the doors open with the cannons.
I had the good fortune of playing this level with a good friend of mine and in all honesty it’s much better as a two player than as a single player level. There is just so much going on that you barely have time to reload before yet another wave of enemies is trying to prematurely end your existence. I also tried playing it solo but died quite quickly as I struggled to change clips while my AI assisted partner ran around shooting enemies too far away to be of much of a threat.
Don’t get me wrong, the game is great fun to play but to be honest apart from the characters and slight reference to the main plot this didn’t feel like Resident Evil at all, a problem which has plagued the last two games. I get the feeling that Capcom are trying to hook a more trigger happy audience with this DLC. Personally I would love to see a happy medium between the two styles.
Also included in this DLC are a couple more characters for the mercenaries game. Not really much to it. Mercenaries reunited could have been left out all together and the new characters could have been placed in the original mercenaries level. The same goes for the new action figures. The game gives you a whole new section to view them when all they needed to do was increase the amount available to view in the library. Oh Capcom, why oh why did you give yourselves extra work by adding unnecessary details like this?
Another new addition that I didn’t get into on the review for ‘Lost In Nightmares’ is the new costume packs, available separately for download on LIVE. There are three new costumes for Chris including the warrior outfit, which makes Chris look as though he should be auditioning for Mad Max, and the heavy metal outfit, which does exactly what it says on the tin. Chris is adorned with metal plated armour and has the ability to use his chain gun in the mercenaries reunion levels.
Sheva has two new outfits as well, first of all the fairytale outfit which is rather revealing at certain angles (no I didn’t look!) but for some reason changes her skin colour to Caucasian, then we have business woman which is a less than appropriate for killing parasite infected villagers and townsfolk but looks very snazzy. These outfits are for aesthetic purposes only and at 160 MS points each they are a treat that could have been included with the level downloads.
If you are a completist I highly recommend getting both new levels as they expand on the story and don’t feel tacked on like a lot of other games DLC. All in all Capcom should give themselves a hearty pat on the back for a job well done.
